Where is my community?
There are so many different places where you can find other people who share some of your interests. This is not an exhaustive list by any means, but if you are looking for community, these are a great start.
1. Sierra Club. I had a doctor tell me one time to go to Sierra Club meetings because you meet cool people and you help the Earth. And actually, he was right, even though it was really weird for a doctor to give me social advice.
2. Church. I know that’s the typical answer, but if you are looking for people who think like you and have many of the same beliefs as you, a local church is a great idea.
3. Intramural teams. If you like to play sports, definitely plug into an intramural team. Almost every city offers adult leagues that aren’t crazy competitive but are crazy fun. And sometimes those teams end up being some of your closest friends.
4. Weddings. If someone gets invited to the same wedding as you, it means you have at least one thing in common- the bride or groom. Be brave and talk to folks you don’t already know- that reception may be full of your future friends!
5. Alumni associations. Though I live in Nashville, there is a large conglomerate of Georgia dawgs in this town. During football season, the alumni association sends emails and tells everyone where to meet up to watch the game. I have really enjoyed meeting the people who bleed red and black, just like me.
The key is finding places where the people share a common interest. What are some other places that you have found community?
